The Story Door Challenge: Where Will Your Next Book Take You?

Would you rather meet your favorite fictional character or step inside the world of your favorite book? That was a question I recently posed to my social media followers, and it got me thinking about something I've always loved about books--A wonderful story doesn't make us choose. It lets us do both. Reading allows us to meet unforgettable characters, explore extraordinary places, and experience adventures that stretch our imaginations. Along the way, we discover new perspectives, recognize familiar feelings, and sometimes learn a little more about ourselves.

I began wondering how we might bring that same sense of adventure into the classroom, and The Story Door Challenge came to life. I've created a free, printable activity for elementary educators, librarians, and families that encourages children to explore stories through imagination, conversation, movement, and creative expression. Students will choose between literary adventures, imagine stepping into fictional worlds, interview characters, and ultimately become storytellers themselves. It's designed to be flexible, easy to use, and, most importantly, fun.

I believe one of the greatest gifts we can give a child is the discovery that reading isn't simply something we do -- It's somewhere we can go.

Download the free Story Door Challenge classroom activity and see where your students' imaginations take them.
